Volkswagen has secured €30 million ($35 million) from the Portuguese government to build its most affordable electric car yet — the ID.Every1. Slated for production in mid-2027 at the Autoeuropa plant in Portugal, this new model will be priced at around €20,000 ($22,000), making it the cheapest EV in Volkswagen’s lineup.

The ID.Every1 represents “the last piece of the puzzle” in Volkswagen’s mission to make electric mobility accessible. Previewed by the ID.EVERY1 concept, the car stays close to that design, embodying the idea of a “€20,000 electric Volkswagen.”

At 3,880 mm long, the ID.1 is slightly smaller than the Polo, fitting neatly between the discontinued Up! and the upcoming ID. 2. The Portuguese government’s investment underscores Autoeuropa’s role as a cornerstone of the national economy, now powering the shift to sustainable mobility.

This compact EV will also be Volkswagen’s first software-defined vehicle (SDV), thanks to its partnership with Rivian, introducing more advanced digital features than any previous entry-level VW. Together with the ID. 2 hatchback and its SUV variant, the ID.1 will form the core of Volkswagen’s new Electric Urban Car Family, bringing the automaker’s electrification vision to the mass market.
